Korfball
-Korfball- is one of the rare sports where men and women are on the
same team. The aim of this game is to pass a ball with a diameter of 68 cm and
a weight of 445 g into a basket called korf, which is 3.5 m above the ground.
The korf looks like a bottomless basket in the shape of a cylinder and is about
25 cm high.

Korfball is played in 2 halves of 30 minutes each and there is a 10 minute half-time break. It requires both offensive and defensive skills.

What are the Korfball Field Features?
It is played with two teams on a ground 40

point and the post. Each team has 4 male and 4 female players. The playing
field is divided into two as offense and defense zones, each zone has 2 male
and 2 female athletes from a team.
What is the aim of Korfball?
The aim in korfball is
to shoot accurately into the korf hoop. In the game, 8 athletes are active in
the half area, while the other 8 athletes are passive in the opposite half
area. Teams in the passive zone (one offense and one defense team) wait for the
game to end in the active zone. When the defending team from the active zone
(one offensive and one defensive team) gets the ball, they throw the ball to
their teammates in the passive zone who will attack on the opposite side, and
this becomes the new active zone of the game. During the match, each player
only plays against the player of the other team with whom he/she is paired. In
Korfball, the female athlete has to match with the female and the male athlete
has to match with the male (Defense) and this match continues throughout the match.
Korfs are 6,7 meters from the baseline. Players have a 360-degree throwing
angle to score. The game starts with a throw from the center court.
The team in possession of the ball has 25
seconds to touch the ball to the corf or score. When this time expires, the
game is filled by the referee and the right of offense is given to the opposing
team from the point where the ball is located.
In Korfball, the athlete who has the ball in
his/her hand cannot run and dribble with the ball, the athlete has to either
pass or shoot. He/she has to pass or shoot without changing his/her position.
In Korfball, players are not allowed to touch
each other, nor are they allowed to hit the ball in the opponent's hand. In
Korfball, men can only defend against men and women can only defend against the
female opponent. If a defender is closer to the post than the attacking player
and within an arm's reach of the attacking player, he/she is defending
correctly and the opposing team is not allowed to shoot.

Korfball originated as a sport of the
Netherlands. In 1902, it was invented by Dutch teacher
Nico Broekhuysen. Broekhuysen wanted to create a team sport in which men
and women could participate equally. To this end, he took some elements of
soccer and created a game in which a team of different genders could compete.
The sport is particularly popular in Europe and in the Netherlands. The International Korfball Federation (IKF) was established to promote the development of the sport and organize international tournaments. Korfball is known as a unique sport that emphasizes equality and teamwork.
